Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano

Lanciano, Italy · 8th century

What is there

Since 1902 the relics have been kept in the marble altar at the center of the sanctuary of the Church of San Francesco in Lanciano.

What the Church says

BeWeB, the heritage portal of the Italian Bishops' Conference, presents the relics in its series on Eucharistic miracles. It reports scientific studies of the relics in 1970 and 1971, and again in 1981.

According to tradition, recorded in writing from the 16th century, a Basilian monk doubted during Mass, and the host became flesh and the wine became blood. The oldest sources date it to about the year 700.
