Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena (relic in Orvieto)

Bolsena and Orvieto, Italy · 1263-1264

What is there

The corporal, the linen cloth from the miracle, is kept in the Cappella del Corporale of Orvieto Cathedral.

What the Church did

Pope Urban IV had the corporal brought to Orvieto. The next year, in 1264, he instituted the feast of Corpus Christi with the bull Transiturus.

According to tradition, in 1263 drops of blood fell from the host onto the corporal while a priest from Bohemia was saying Mass at Bolsena.

The Basilica of Santa Cristina in Bolsena, where the miracle took place, dates the bull Transiturus to August 11, 1264.
