Holy See: papal message affirming the apparition (2021). No bishop's decreePope Francis, 2021Source: The Holy See

Church approval

In a video message on March 19, 2021, for the raising of Knock to an international shrine, Pope Francis spoke of "the apparition of August 21, 1879, when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to some villagers of Knock together with St. Joseph and St. John the Apostle." This is our translation of the Holy See's Italian text.

Vatican News reported the message on March 19, 2021, the day the shrine was raised to the status of International Marian and Eucharistic Shrine.

A Church commission of inquiry met in 1879 and concluded that "the testimonies of all, taken as a whole, is trustworthy and satisfactory." A second commission met in 1935 and 1936. Neither issued a formal decree.

The Apparition Chapel encloses the original gable wall of the parish church, where the apparition was witnessed in 1879.
