The Holy See's biography of St. Juan Diego, published for his canonization, states: "On 9 December 1531, when Juan Diego was on his way to morning Mass, the Blessed Mother appeared to him on Tepeyac Hill."

At the canonization Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe on July 31, 2002, Pope John Paul II said that in the accounts of Guadalupe the Virgin Mary "reveals herself to Juan Diego as the Mother of the true God."

The Dicastery for the Causes of Saints describes St. Juan Diego as the seer of Guadalupe.

Juan Diego lived from 1474 to 1548.
